The Future Leaders of Tourism Workshops

UNWTO and MOTA workshops addressing women's empowerment in tourism will take place in Amman (9 May 2022) and Petra (11 May 2022).

Introduction

UNWTO and the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities of Jordan (MoTA) have organized two in-person workshops in Amman and Petra addressing the challenges and opportunities for women in tourism.

To reach as many women as possible working in tourism across the country, the event took place in these two strategic locations Amman and Petra. Both workshops shared the same agenda, speakers, and key topics for the empowerment of women working in tourism in Jordan, addressing a total of approximately 181 women in both locations.

Context

Women working in tourism have been affected to a greater extent than men by the COVID-19 pandemic. Added to the global crisis that has had the most devastating and unprecedented impact on the tourism industry, women have seen their working conditions and rights more affected, given their contributions to the sector remain less visible and less valued.

As part of the restart of tourism, Jordan is committed to addressing the gender inequalities in the sector through different initiatives and such as the UNWTO project Centre Stage ‘Women’s empowerment during the covid-19 pandemic’, which supports different countries to implement tailor made action plans for the public and private sectors, in order to foster the empowerment of women during the recovery.

Likewise, through the formulation of a 5 year ‘Gender and Inclusion Project Plan’ MoTA has defined the roadmap to help women working in the tourism and hospitality workforce to achieve economic empowerment and diminish the challenges that hinder their professional progression in the industry.

Partners

The two workshops have been organized within the framework of the Centre Stage project, with the kind support of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and UN Women.

Both events shared the same Agenda and addressed key challenges and strategic topics to empower women working in tourism in Jordan.
