World Tourism Day 2022 Celebration “Rethinking Tourism”

The Cyprus Sustainable Tourism Initiative (CSTI) with the support of the Larnaka Municipality and Larnaka Tourism Board organises an event to celebrate World Tourism Day 2022: “Rethinking Tourism”. The event is under the auspices of the Republic of Cyprus Deputy Ministry of Tourism and will be held in Larnaka, Cyprus. The aim of the event is to inspire the participants to Rethink Tourism and include sustainability as a priority to redesign tourism in Cyprus. The Keynote Presentation: “Fit for 55 and Tourism” will be held by Yiannis Karousos, Minister of Transport, Communications & Works of the Republic of Cyprus. Also, Jeremy Sampson, CEO at The Travel Foundation, UK & Chair at Future of Tourism Coalition will contribute with a video presentation: “Adapt or Die: Tourism in a Changing World”. An initiative of TUI Care Foundation in partnership with CSTI will also be presented during the event to share the main actions of the “Keep our Sand and Sea Plastic Free, Destination Zero Plastic in Cyprus” project. This initiative started in 2019 and so far, it has achieved the reduction of single-use plastic equal to the total weight of 23 Boeing 737-800 airplanes by taking actions in just 100 tourist businesses. At the end of the event the Chairman of CSTI, Philippos Drousiotis, will sum up and present CSTI’s view on how we can move forward by “Rethinking Tourism” in a more sustainable way. Numerous side events will take place: - Deputy Ministry of Tourism of the Republic of Cyprus: Presentation of the 12 Destination Labels - Photo exhibition: “Plastic Pollution - another threat to the beauty of our sand and sea & key contributor to environmental degradation” - Domognostics+ Presentation: Rethinking Tourism with Artificial Intelligence as a tool to ensure good indoor air quality for tourists - Workshops of traditional creativity - Upcycling workshops from recycled plastic - Local Producers Fair - Music Programme by Katie Economidou and Agni Sacca - Reception with Traditional Delights The event is free and open to the public.
