UNWTO activities at FITUR 2015

Models of sustainable tourism production and consumption, the role of technology in accessible tourism for all, the future of tourism in the Middle East and North Africa, tourism investment in Africa and shopping tourism are among the many topics to be addressed at UNWTO activities during the International Tourism Trade Fair, FITUR. Furthermore, FITUR will once again be the stage for the UNWTO Awards for Excellence and Innovation in Tourism official ceremony (Madrid, Spain, 28 January – 1 February 2015).


UNWTO Awards Symposium (27 January, 15.00-18.20, IFEMA Madrid)

The UNWTO Awards Symposium is an opportunity to share best practices in tourism innovation. The Symposium includes an inspirational speech by this year’s UNWTO Ulysses Prize Laureate as well as presentations by the finalists of the UNWTO Awards for Excellence and Innovation in the various categories - Public Policy and Governance, Enterprises, Non-Governmental Organizations and Research and Technology.

FITUR GREEN 2015: Towards sustainable consumption and production in the tourism sector (28 -30 January, FITUR Madrid)

The sixth edition of FITUR Green, jointly organized by UNWTO, the Instituto Tecnológico Hotelero (ITH) and FITUR, is held under the theme “Towards sustainable consumption and production in the tourism sector”. Over the course of three days, the event will feature existing national and international initiatives of sustainable tourism through roundtables, presentations and workshops, giving particular emphasis to the recently established 10YFP Programme on Sustainable Tourism, led by UNWTO.

Children’s Rights and Corporate Social Responsibility in Tourism (28 January, 16.00-17.30, FITUR Madrid)

The workshop Children Rights and Corporate Social Responsibility in Tourism, organized by the UNICEF Spanish Committee with the support of UNWTO, will showcase the commitments developed by leading tourism companies to incorporate child protection and the fight against all forms of child exploitation in their social policies and strategies. The aim of the workshop is to inspire other entities of the tourism sector to get involved in initiatives that can give children the best start in life.

11th UNWTO Awards Ceremony and Gala Dinner (28 January, 18.00-22.00, FITUR Madrid)

As the flagship awards for the global tourism sector, the UNWTO Awards for Excellence and Innovation in Tourism, honors initiatives and individuals that contribute to advancing knowledge and innovation, in line with the principles of the UNWTO Global Code of Ethics and the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. For the second consecutive year, the winners of the UNWTO Awards will be unveiled at FITUR, celebrating outstanding contributions made in the field of tourism.

VI Tourism Investment and Business Forum for Africa (INVESTOUR) (29 January, 10.00 – 19.30, FITUR Madrid)

INVESTOUR, organized by UNWTO together with FITUR and Casa África, will hold its sixth edition at FITUR 2015. The Forum promotes investment and business opportunities in Africa by bringing together African tourism project leaders with potential international partners and investors in a business-to-business (B2B) session.

First UNWTO Conference on Shopping Tourism (29 January, 11.30 – 13.30, FITUR Madrid)

Shopping tourism is becoming an increasingly relevant component of the tourism value chain. The First UNWTO Conference on Shopping Tourism, organized together with FITUR Shopping, provides a platform for participants to analyze trends in shopping tourism and exchange innovative and creative experiences from all over the world through the participation of city representatives from London, Madrid and New York.

Technology at the service of Tourism for All (29 January, 12.00 – 14.00, FITUR Madrid)

New technologies can contribute to making the tourism experience more accessible and rewarding for everyone, including seniors, persons with disabilities and others with reduced mobility. This event, organized by UNWTO, Fundación ONCE and PREDIF (Plataforma Representativa Estatal de Personas con Discapacidad Física) in collaboration with IFEMA and Vodafone España, will highlight good practices in the development and use of new technologies in the fields of travel, tourism and leisure. It will also address the major challenges for generalizing the use of these technologies in the various links of the accessibility chain in tourism.

UNWTO & Casa Árabe Ministerial Round Table on Tourism Development in the MENA region (29 January, 16.00 – 17.30, FITUR Madrid)

Organized jointly by UNWTO and Casa Árabe, the Ministerial Round Table will focus on the current situation and prospects of tourism in the Middle East and North Africa. Confirmed speakers include the Ministers of Tourism of Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Oman and Palestine.
