Volume twelve - Cultural Routes and Itineraries

The UNWTO Affiliate Members Global Report, Volume 12 on Cultural Routes and Itineraries is a joint publication with Affiliate Member, Agencia de Turismo de Las Islas Baleares (ATB). The report highlights current trends in cultural tourism providing insight on how cultural routes and itineraries contribute to tourism development. Cultural routes have provided destinations globally with a notable competitive advantage among cultural tourists who benefit from more innovative tourism products and valuable visitor experiences.

Recently, ATB has designed the Balearic Archaeosites as a cultural tourism product with an archaeological route for the whole of the archipelago. This report highlights similar cases and best practices from all over the world providing a framework for designing and establishing cultural routes globally. This phenomenon is beneficial to the tourism sector reaping sustainable socio-economic and cultural benefits across the different destinations among formulated routes.

UNWTO Affiliate Members Board elects its new Chairman

The UNWTO Affiliate Members Board has elected Mr. Edmund Bartlett as its new Chairman at the Board's Meeting held at the sidelines of the World Travel Market (WTM, London, United Kingdom, 3 November 2015).

Mr. Bartlett, former Minister of Tourism of Jamaica (2007-2011), is the Co-Founder of CTICo. Besides his career in tourism, for which he was named Man of the Year in 2009 by the Jamaica Observer, Mr. Bartlett has championed the cause of education and capacity building throughout his career. He is the Founder of the Jamaican Foundation for Children, which he continues to support.

As a Minister of Tourism of Jamaica, he served as a member of the UNWTO Executive Council, representing the Americas as well as Vice-Chairman of the UNWTO Regional Commission for the Americas and Chairman of CARICOM’s Sub-Committee in the areas of Tourism and Transportation/Civil Aviation. He has also served as Vice President for the World Conference on Cultural Policies and as a Vice-Chairman of the UN International Youth Year Advisory Committee during International Youth Year.

UNWTO Affiliate Members Regional Report

UNWTO and Casa África have launched in 2015 a special report dedicated to tourism product development in Africa. 

The report reviews the current situation of Africa’s tourist markets as well as its future potential and includes several case studies from public and private sectors on tourism product development including key concepts, methodology and best practices.

UNWTO strengthens ties with its Affiliate Members

UNWTO signed this week new Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with five of its Affiliate Members – the Real Academia de Gastronomía (Spain), Spain Cares (Spain), Student Marketing (Slovakia), the Universidad Internacional de la Rioja (Spain), and VIP World Events (Spain)  (Madrid, Spain, 6-7 July 2015).

The MoUs aim to enhance collaboration between UNWTO and the respective Affiliate Member in the areas of research and the promotion of best practices. In particular, the future cooperation activities include:

–  Real Academia de Gastronomía: Development of gastronomic tourism and collaboration with the UNWTO Gastronomy Network.
–  Spain Cares: Research on health tourism, including collaboration in the publication of a Global Report on health tourism and public-private collaboration in specialized segments.
–  Student Marketing: Cooperation in the publication of a Global Report on Youth Tourism.
– Universidad Internacional de la Rioja: Research, knowledge exchange and promotion of best practices, namely on wine tourism, participation in the UNWTO Knowledge Network, the UNWTO Gastronomy Network and Working Group on Youth Tourism
–  VIP World Events: Research on the high end segments of tourism.

“Partnerships are a priority for UNWTO and we are very pleased to consolidate our relationships with such active UNWTO Affiliate Members through these agreements”, said UNWTO Secretary-General Taleb Rifai highlighting that “cooperation between public, private sector and the academia are fundamental pillars to advance knowledge and competitiveness in our sector”.

In a structure unique to the United Nations system, in addition to its 156 Member States, UNWTO counts on over 450 Affiliate Members from various fields in the public and private sector, civil society and academia.

JTTA has been serving domestically for tourism development in Japan through our various activities for eighty years.

Some of our activities are:

  1. Operating national movement for tourism by establishing specified organizations from all industries in Japan.
  2. Supporting regions (cities and towns) in achieving their tourism development through our consultation.
  3. Managing so-called ´Tourism-Academy´to train and educate professionals in various subjects of the tourism field.
  4. Operating JATA Tourism EXPO Japan
    JATA Tourism EXPO Japan has been launched since 2014 under the consolidation between Tabi-Haku (outbound)-operated by JATA and Tabi-Fair (domestic) - operated by JTTA, together referred to as ONE JAPAN, to assist tourism growth in Japan.
  5. Building a good relationship with neighbor countries such as PR of China, Korea and Taiwan. JTTA also supported a mission for visiting Seoul and Beijing which involved more than 3000 people. Moreover, JTTA has the role as the organizer in Japan for International Travel Fair Taipei, which is the biggest travel expo in Taiwan.
  6. Working as a window and Secretary General in Japan for WTTC activity since 2012.

Following the elections held at 5 November 2013 on the sidelines of the 2013 World Travel Market (London, UK), the Instituto Para La Calidad Turística Española, ICTE (Spain), represented by Mr. Miguel Mirones Díez, has been voted to the position of Chairman of the Affiliate Members Board for the next two years. The previous chair was held by the Association for Greek Tourism Enterprises (SETE), represented by Mr. Georgios Drakopoulos.

UNWTO welcomes 39 new Affiliate Members

The 95th Session of the UNWTO Executive Council approved the candidatures of 39 new Affiliate Members to the Organization.

Applications from 39 candidates across various regions and fields of work related to tourism were approved to become UNWTO Affiliate Members by the 95th Session of the UNWTO Executive Council (Belgrade, Serbia, 27-29 May 2013)

The new members will be able to avail of the various benefits of membership, including free access to UNWTO market intelligence, participation in the Organization´s industry reports, networking and association with the UNWTO brand.

The UNWTO Affiliate Members are a forum where associated organizations from all levels, from global to local, both public and private, meet to drive collaboration, creativity and innovation in order to advance sustainable tourism.

The new Affiliate Members are expected to be ratified at the upcoming UNWTO General Assembly (25-29 August 2013, Victoria Falls, Zambia/Zimbabwe).

Ninety-fith Session - Belgrade, Serbia

At the 95th Session of the UNWTO Executive Council (Belgrade, Serbia), applications from 39 candidates were approved for joining the Organization’s Affiliate Members Programme.

At this edition of the Executive Council, we not only only achieved  great success in the number of new candidatures, but also in the quality and variety of the applicants from all different UNWTO regions and work scopes, such as the Brazilian Association of Tour Operators, the Spanish Confederation of Travel Agents, NH Hotels and the International Student Identity Card Association, among many others.

Following the admission process, the 39 new members will be able to enjoy benefits including free access to UNWTO market intelligence, participation in the Organization’s industry reports, priority invitations to events and association with the UNWTO brand.

We would like to highlight the increased presence of UNWTO in Central and Eastern Europe and show our special appreciation to the Azerbaijan Tourism Association, a Member of the Affiliate Members Board, for promoting the Affiliate Members Programme in their country. This support contributed to add 18 new Affiliate Members from Azerbaijan during this Executive Council.

strengthened with 26 new Organizations

At the 93rd Session of the UNWTO Executive Council (Madrid, Spain), applications from 26 candidates were approved for joining the Organization’s Affiliate Members Programme. This new entrance not only means a great boost to the working relationship between the nongovernmental sector and the UNWTO but also a step forward in the opening to new sectors related to tourism, such as retail, ICT, media, and law.

 

Leading companies in their respective sectors such as Microsoft Innovation Center Tourism Technologies and Value Retail, as well as important institutions from the academic world such as the École Hôtelière de Lausanne and University of Business in Prague join DMOs in from Brazil and Korea in the latest admission to the Affiliate Members Programme of the World Tourism Organization.

Following the admission process which for the first time included an agreement to the principles of the UNWTO Global Code of Ethics for Tourism, the 26 new members will be able to enjoy benefits including free access to UNWTO market intelligence, participation in the Organization’s industry reports, priority invitations to events and association with the UNWTO brand.

In response to the new round of affiliations, Javier Blanco, Director of UNWTO Affiliate Members said: “It is a great satisfaction for us to welcome these new 26 Affiliate Members. They will not only reinforce the vision and the capacity of the nongovernmental sector within the Organization but they represent a clear boost to the participation of the private sector in the positive impact tourism is making towards global development”.

In recent years in addition to the diverse range of candidatures from Europe, there has been a marked increase in affiliations from beyond this region with affiliations from nations as diverse as Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Palestine, United States, Venezuela, Republic of Korea, Angola and Australia.
