2023 Global INSTO Meeting

21- 22 November 2023 | Madrid, Spain

The 2023 Global Meeting of the UNWTO International Network of Sustainable Tourism Observatories (INSTO) is scheduled to take place on  21 and 22 November 2023 at the UNWTO Headquarters in Madrid, Spain.

Participants in this year's event have the option to attend in person or engage remotely.

Given limited capacity, in-person attendance will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis. Priority will be given to: i) INSTO members, ii) those in the process of becoming members, iii) destinations with a clear interest in establishing an Observatory, as well as iv) UNWTO Member States and v) UNWTO Affiliate Members.

In line with previous meetings, this meeting will provide a platform for established Observatories, interested destinations, and various stakeholders in the tourism industry to share experiences and best practices and to jointly advance monitoring efforts at the destination level. 

The content of the event will be structured around these key themes:

  • Importance of Governance: Exploring the critical role of effective governance in steering sustainable tourism development towards success and long-lasting impact and the role of observatories in this context.
  • Importance of participatory approaches: Showcasing the significance of involving local communities and stakeholders in shaping sustainable tourism practices and policies through the work of the Observatories.
  • The net positive approach: Focusing on practical experiences in assessing the environmental impacts of tourism activities through cases studies and tools for measuring and mitigating the ecological footprint of tourism and will looking into measurement aspects in the areas of waste, wastewater and water management and climate action.

Following the meeting in Madrid, an optional visit to Malaga for technical sessions and visits is possible on 23-24 November 2023, at the kind invitation of the Observatory of Malaga.

Travel, including international flights and local transport to and within Spain, and accommodation for the Madrid and Malaga meetings must be organized and paid for by the participants.
