Macao Global Tourism Economy Forum

The 1st Global Tourism Economy Forum was held in Macao SAR, China from 9-11 September 2012. This event was the first hybrid tourism forum in Asia and the Pacific and served as an interactive discussion platform to promote sustainable economic development of world tourism, further establishing tourism as a driving force in global economic development.

UNWTO is the collaboration partner of the Global Tourism Economy Research Centre (GTERC) and the supporting organization of the Forum, which was also widely endorsed by governments and leading tourism organizations including the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) and Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA).

In September 2012, the Forum was unveiled under the theme “Growth driving Growth: Examining the Synergistic Interplay between Tourism and Economic Development”. Over the course of a one-and-a-half-day event, distinguished speakers from across the world shared insights on five subjects including: (1) Emerging New Markets (2) Mega Events and Festivals (3) Media and Technology (4) Destination Planning, and (5) Lifestyle and Entertainment.

The Global Tourism Economy Forum provided a high-level networking platform to bridge the needs between investors and project owners, developers and hoteliers, retail brands and space planners, as well as event organizers and local governments. This unique combination of people and resources was expected to generate immediate and tangible benefits to all those attending this engaging and interactive event.
