Expanding Horizons: Strengthening Affiliate Membership in Africa

Expanding Horizons: Strengthening Affiliate Membership in Africa

Aligned with our commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive Affiliate Membership, the Affiliate Members Department (AMD) has intensified efforts to increase our presence in Africa. Acknowledging the current underrepresentation of African entities, we have dedicated recent months to a targeted Expansion Strategy.

Since September 2023, we have engaged approximately 250 entities across 19 African countries, with a specific focus on those countries currently lacking Affiliate Members. Six entities have successfully completed the application process, and we are looking forward to welcoming them to the Affiliate Members network during the first half of 2024, coinciding with the next UNWTO Executive Council.

The recently held 25th UNWTO General Assembly witnessed the inclusion of four African entities as Affiliate Members, out of a total of 39 entities. Coming from Benin, Côte d'Ivoire, Nigeria, and Tanzania, these new additions further emphasize our commitment to a more representative and global Affiliate Membership.

Looking ahead, we anticipate additional responses from our target entities by the end of December 2023. This coordinated effort aligns with our broader strategy for a quality-oriented and geographically balanced Affiliate Membership, ensuring that our Affiliate Members embody the rich diversity and expertise present in the African Region.
