2nd UNWTO World Conference on Smart Destinations

Organized by the World Tourism Organization, the Ministry of Energy, Tourism and the Digital Agenda of Spain and the Principality of Asturias, the 2nd UNWTO World Conference on Smart Destinations, was held in Oviedo (Asturias, Spain) on 25th – 27th of June 2018.

In order to lead and shape new tourism models for the 21st century based on innovation, technology, sustainability and accessibility, the annual gathering of the World Conference on Smart Destinations gathered international tourism experts to discuss the opportunities and challenges for the tourism sector, and destinations in particular, arising from the development, implementation and management of innovative products and services that are based on new technological solutions.

The Conference brought together government representatives, private sector entities, researchers and academics, as well as technology centers. The event was an important platform for participants to share knowledge, build partnerships and advance in their understanding about the development and key elements of smart destinations.

The 2018 edition of the event covered themes such as:

  • The digital transformation within destinations
  • Technological solutions for impact monitoring
  • Smart destination governance
  • The importance of new technologies for sustainable development
  • Standardization frameworks, data accessibility and cyber-security
  • The role of participatory approaches and open platforms
  • Data-driven success stories and best practices in tourism innovation

Hackathon for Smart Destinations (#Hack4SD)

A new addition to this year’s event was the introduction of the first Hackathon for Smart Destinations (#Hack4SD) focusing in developing smart solutions for sustainable development that took place prior to the conference last 23 to 24 June.
