FiturGreen 2015: Sustainable Tourism from the Traveller’s Perspective

PR No.: 15005

Sustainable development is fundamental to ensure the future of the tourism sector and the viability of tourism destinations, while contributing to more responsible consumption. The role of travellers as agents of positive change will be the focus of FiturGreen 2015 which will feature models, success stories and innovative tools that improve the sustainability of the tourism value chain (28-30 January 2015, Fitur, Madrid).

“Towards sustainable consumption and production in the tourism sector” is the theme of the sixth edition of FiturGreen, the leading forum on tourism and sustainability.  This year’s edition will be focused on the role of travellers in promoting sustainable tourism as drivers of change and innovation throughout the tourism value chain.

Success stories, initiatives, projects and experiences from around the world will serve as examples of how to approach sustainable tourism development in its three pillars—environmental (the conservation and preservation of the environment), economic (energy efficiency, savings on energy costs) and social (Corporate Social Responsibility), all of which are critical for the long-term viability of tourism companies and destinations.

FiturGreen 2015 is co-organized by the Instituto Tecnológico Hotelero (ITH), the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the FITUR International Tourism Fair. This edition gathers representatives from the governments of Germany and Morocco, from international organizations such as the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and OECD, as well as private-sector leaders (TripAdvisor, TUI Group, Meliá Hotels, NH Hotel Group), to address the challenges of sustainable management in the tourism sector.

Sustainable consumption and production

FiturGreen 2015 will feature, on Wednesday 28 January, the presentation of the 10-Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production Patterns (10YFP) established following the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) in June 2012. Particular attention will be given to the newly create Sustainable Tourism Programme of the 10YFP, a Programme led by UNWTO. The event will allow participants to debate the 10YFP, accelerating the adoption of sustainable consumption and production patterns as well as success stories in the area of efficient climate-control systems.

Towards sustainable hotels

On Thursday, 29 January, the focus will be on technologies, tools and strategies that improve efficiency and sustainability, ensure businesses viability, impact positively on communities and drive the design and management of sustainable travel products and their global impact.  In addition, experts will present financial instruments that can support transport and accommodation as well as complementary services and leisure products at destinations in the framework of the II Meeting of the ITH Network: Financing Sustainability Hotels, introduced by ITH in June 2013.

FiturGreen 2015 concludes on Friday, 30 January, with the discussion of issues such as intelligent waste management, smart energy procurement and business models associated with sustainability.
