FITS in Tiznit, Morocco, 22 and 23 October 2012

The UNWTO was present at the International Forum on Fair Tourism and Sustainable Development (FITS), held on 22 and 23 October 2012 in Tiznit, in the Souss-Massa-Draa region of Morocco, whose aim was to boost the tourism development sector by gathering together Moroccan stakeholders interested in tourism that is responsible, fair and creates jobs in rural areas, which allows the promotion of local products and the protection of natural and cultural heritage.

The main theme was the development of sustainable tourism in sensitive areas of the Mediterranean countries, through partnership by public and private actors, better knowledge at the international level of the tourism potential of Mediterranean areas, especially in Morocco, and concrete proposals for strengthening these fragile areas.

It is in this spirit that the UNWTO, for its part, presented its ST-EP Initiative and the mechanisms it has to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, thereby contributing to the fight against poverty.
