UNWTO saddened by the death of Jaime Segarra, ‘a founding father of UNWTO’

UNWTO is saddened by the passing of Jaime Segarra, a former Vice-President of UNWTO’s predecessor, the International Union of Official Travel Organizations (IUOTO), and a founding father of UNWTO.

Mr. Segarra, who died on 27 September, had devoted his life to travel and tourism, and was instrumental in the founding of UNWTO.

As a Vice-President of the IUOTO and head of the Spanish delegation to the Organization, Mr. Segarra was one of the delegates to approve the UNWTO Statutes on 27 September 1970. In 1973, Mr. Segarra offered to host the first UNWTO General Assembly in Madrid, Spain, in May 1975, at which it was decided that UNWTO Headquarters would be based in Spain.

UNWTO expresses its deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Mr. Segarra for their loss.
