Workshop for the Management of Coastal Beaches in Kenya

Workshop for the Management of Coastal Beaches in Kenya

On the occasion of the 90th session of the Executive Council held in Mombasa, Kenya, on 19-21 June 2011, an agreement was signed between the World Tourism Organization, the Ministry of Tourism of Kenya, and the Mombasa & Coast Tourist Association.

This agreement, with a duration of two months, concerns the implementation of the first phase of the destination management project entitled "Workshops for the Management of Coastal Beaches of Kenya"  financed by the ST-EP Destination Management Fund established by the UNWTO ST-EP Foundation, the Travel Foundation and the UNWTO. Two workshops will thus be held on 29 June and on 1 July 2011, in Diani and in Bamburi, near Mombasa. At the workshops, coastal beaches that have strong potential will be identified with a view to creating employment opportunities for the local population, notably for young people.

An action plan will subsequently be drawn up based on the different models for the sustainable development of the environment and lessons learned, and whose recommendations for opening up coastal tourism occupations (beach maintenance and supervision, tourism reception points, tourism police unit, etc.) will be applied in a second phase of the project.
