#MapMyDay with Wheelmap.org

Ready to chill? So many people in our society look forward to that wonderful time of the year when relaxing in a new place away from home is what it is all about. For millions of people who use a wheelchair or other mobility aid or parents who are traveling with a small child in a stroller, planning a vacation means that many questions need to be answered beforehand: Which hotel or vacation rental is accessible? Where can I go shopping for groceries with my wheelchair? Which tourist sites are accessible without steps? We can do something about the barriers around us that put limits to our freedom of traveling. But first, we need to become aware of them! For this purpose, the German NGO Sozialhelden developed the online map “Wheelmap.org”, an interactive city map where everyone can see if a public place is accessible for wheelchair users or not. It is a worldwide map which gives valuable answers to everyone who is planning a vacation abroad or a short trip to another city. In the course of the last six years, volunteers around the world have marked nearly 700,000 places on the map, and every day approximately 500 newly marked places are added. The first edition of the worldwide mapping event in December 2015 was very successful – people marked more than 20,000 places within the three weeks before Christmas. So, join in for the 2nd edition of the worldwide #mapmyday and help promote a #tourism4all by marking places on Wheelmap.org. Supporting the event is easy: Download the free Wheelmap app from the store and mark places in your neighbourhood whether they are wheelchair accessible or not. Be the movement!
