El Salvador and Honduras to host UNWTO Regional Commission for the Americas in 2017
PR No.: PR16032
El Salvador and Honduras will be the host countries of the 61st meeting of the Regional Commission for the Americas of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). The decision was one of the main conclusions of the 60th Regional meeting, which concluded recently in Havana, Cuba.
The 2017 meeting will take place in El Salvador and Honduras, and constitutes the first time in the history of the Organization that it is being held with a dual-site format. The Salvadoran capital will host the meetings on Organization matters, while the technical seminar that is traditionally held in the framework of the Commission meeting will be held in the Honduran city of Roatán.
The sixtieth edition of the meeting of the UNWTO Regional Commission for the Americas, held over the past days in Havana, took place in the context of the Tourism Fair of Havana, FITCUBA 2017. The meeting was attended by 130 representatives from 29 countries, including seventeen ministers.
The challenges and opportunities of the tourism sector in the Americas and the programme of work of the UNWTO in the region were the main topics discussed at the different sessions. The countries attending the meeting issued a joint statement of support for Ecuador as an expression of solidarity in the face of the tragic consequences of the earthquake that hit the country in late April.
