A green oasis in the heart of the Triglav National Park

Two third of Bohinj lies within the Triglav National Park, Slovenia’s only national park. More than 65% of the municipality of Bohinj is covered by protected areas of cultural heritage including cultural and historical landscape, memorial and garden heritage and archaeological sites.

The village is of national importance in terms of the cultural and symbolic significance of the landscape. Among the most important features of Bohinj stand the Lake Bohinj, Triglav, the Savica waterfall, the Church of St. John the Baptist, the clustered old village nuclei surrounded by orchards, the groups of goat-buildings, the mountains with tents and hilly meadows, and the glacial-river landforms in the vicinity of the lake bowl and in the valley of the Sava River.

Elements of intangible heritage in Bohinj refer to the Bohinj man, the man who lived, created and developed in the middle of the Alps. It was from Bohinj that the first climbers to the Triglav Mountains set out, where the first mountaineering association was founded, and where artists sought and found their creative inspiration in its landscape: poets (France Prešeren with The Baptism at Savica), writers (Valentin Vodnik), painters, composers, photographers and film makers. Notably, the first Slovenian film “In the Kingdom of Zlatorog” was shot in Bohinj.

HIGHLIGHTS

-

The International Alpine Flower festival

An important part of the promotion of Bohinj’s cultural heritage is the International Alpine Flower Festival. It raises awareness on the biodiversity of the Bohinj meadows and the traditional farming methods that preserve them.

-

Reducing carbon footprint

Traffic congestion in the summer months is extremely high and has a major impact on the lives of the villagers. In the context of solving local problems in areas with a high number of visitors, Bohinj is focusing on sustainable solutions including environmentally friendly forms of mobility, in addition to spatial and temporal restrictions on visits. The village authorities have introduced such measures to ensure that local people can have access to a more sustainable and inclusive mobility system. Achieving the targeted off-peak demand levels and minimising the impact of the tourist season is one of the eight main objectives of the Bohinj Destination Vision. This has led to a rise in the number of visits to Bohinj in spring and autumn and has increased the average length of stays from 3 days per year in 2011 to 4.2 days per year in 2020.
