“Words Alone Will Not Save Jobs”: UNWTO Leads Call for Action to Support Tourism Recovery

In the third meeting of the Global Tourism Crisis Committee, the UNWTO Secretary-General, Zurab Pololikashvili, urged members to increase pressure on world leaders to take decisive action to safeguard the millions of jobs under threat as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. UNWTO is taking the lead in ensuring governments do all they can to safeguard livelihoods and shield the most vulnerable members of society.

96% of Global Destinations Now Have Travel Restrictions

New research from UNWTO has found that 96% of all worldwide destinations have introduced travel restrictions since January 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The report also looked at the level of travel restrictions from country-to-country.

Could COVID-19 Lead to a 30% Fall in International Tourists?

UNWTO expects that international tourist arrivals will be down by 20% to 30% in 2020 when compared with 2019 figures. This could translate into a decline in international tourism receipts (exports) of between US$300-450 billion, almost one third of the US$ 1.5 trillion generated in 2019.
