INNOVATION CHALLENGE ON CLIMATE SOLUTIONS FOR TOURISM TRANSPORT

UNWTO’s 1st Innovation Challenge on Climate Solutions for Tourism Transport

UNWTO’s 1st Innovation Challenge on Climate Solutions for Tourism Transport

What can be done so that tourism transforms in such a way that this predicted increase in transport-related emissions does not become a reality?

According to the UNWTO/ITF report on “Transport-related CO2 emissions of the tourism sector – Modelling Results”, under the current ambition scenario, a total of 1,998 million tonnes of transport-related CO2 will be attributable to tourism by 2030, representing an increase of 25% from 2016 (1,597 million tonnes CO2).

What can be done so that tourism transforms in such a way that this predicted increase in transport-related emissions does not become a reality?

The challenge aims to identify and recognize innovative solutions aimed at accelerating the decoupling of tourism growth from transport-related emissions. It is directly connected to the implementation of SDG 13 on Climate Action.

THE OBJECTIVE

Transforming tourism for climate action requires out-of-the box thinking and determined actions. This challenge aims to identify and recognize solutions capable to contribute effectively to decoupling tourism growth from its transport-related emissions and which are innovative, measurable, scalable, replicable and impactful.
